  • NAACP

    The National Association for the Advancement of Colored People (NAACP) was founded in 1909 by an interracial group of people, including W.E.B. Du Bois, Ida B. Wells, Mary White Ovington, and others. The NAACP’s work has had a significant impact on the lives of African Americans and other minorities in the United States and around the world.

  • National Consumers League (NCL)

    a private non-profit organization representing consumers on market and workplace issues.

  • Nationalism

    Support for one’s own nation often at the exclusion of others.

  • Nativism

    a policy of protecting the interest of native-born or established inhabitants over those of immigrants

  • Naturalized

    admitted to the citizenship of a country

  • Necessary and Proper Clause

    Gives Congress the power to expand federal authority into areas not specifically cited in the Constitution as long as it is essential.

  • Nepotism

    The practice among those with power or influence of favoring relatives, friends, or associates, especially by giving them jobs.

  • New Deal

    a series of public programs and reforms enacted by President Franklin D. Roosevelt’s administration between 1933 and 1938 in response to the Great Depression

  • Nineteenth Amendment

    declared that the right to vote cannot be denied based on sex

  • Notary

    a person authorized to perform acts in legal affairs.
