I have spent the summer interning at Massachusetts State Senator Lydia Edwards’ office through a fellowship my school offers. This fellowship also included a recent DC trip, where I spent time at Capitol Hill, learning about the House and the Senate in person through real experience. I was lucky enough to meet Congresswoman Ayanna Pressley, Congressman Jim McGovern, Congressman Stephen Lynch, and Senator Ed Markey.

This summer I am interning at Purina Pet Care! I am working in the research department doing regulatory and scientific affairs. I ensure that our products are compliant in all markets across the world. I have also helped with product development and tracking legislation.

In June, I went to Rhodes College for their Mock Trial Summer Academy! We took classes, heard from local professors, and practiced our case! It was awesome, and I made so many great friends that I’m staying in touch with. I was an attorney for the defendant, and then I witnessed as the lead investigator on the case! Rhodes hosts this camp every year with their amazing counselors…I definitely recommend it to everyone!

Over the past year, I have had the privilege of becoming more civically engaged in my community. Since August 2025, I have worked alongside the California Secretary of State’s Office to implement voter registration drives and mobilize high school juniors and seniors to participate in the 2026 California Primary Election. In late April, I organized a school-wide assembly at my high school that drew more than 600 attendees and resulted in over 120 students registering to vote. In recognition of these efforts, I was later selected by California State Superintendent Tony Thurmond as one of approximately 250 seniors statewide to be nominated for the U.S. Presidential Scholars Program. Following my high school graduation, I volunteered with the American Legion’s California Boys State and Girls’ State program as a counselor, helping support an immersive civics experience where rising high school seniors build and operate a government from the ground up. Looking ahead, I will serve as an incoming fellow with the nonprofit GENup, where I will conduct research on youth voter turnout in Northern California and collaborate on advocacy efforts to support youth-focused legislation in the California State Legislature. I am grateful for the experience that the Hometown program in Sacramento gave me, as it has inspired me to enact change in the world and get involved in politics.

Since completing this program, I have continued to pursue opportunities to observe court proceedings and participate in law-related programs, including the Memphis Bar Association’s Summer Law Internship Program. I also had the opportunity to return to District Court, where I worked with Judge Claxton, further strengthening my understanding of the judicial system and my commitment to becoming a fair prosecutor.

In July, we both traveled across the pond for a study abroad trip at the University of Oxford through the partnership of the Rothermere American Institute and the Kinder Institute on Constitutional Democracy. With classes ranging from the Glorious Revolution to museum studies to public policy analysis, we engaged in rigorous coursework from Oxford faculty alongside peers from across the US. Throughout the trip, we enjoyed making new friends who inspired us, participating in deep conversations that challenged us, and experiencing many adventures that helped us grow. It has certainly been one of the coolest opportunities of our lives!

This past month, I had the incredible opportunity to travel to Washington, D.C. for We the People Nationals, where my class and I represented Indiana.

Looking ahead, I am excited to share that I will be attending Indiana University Bloomington in the summer for a scholars program before transitioning into the fall semester. I am so looking forward to this next chapter and all the opportunities it will bring!

Last month, I had an excellent experience at the State House with my criminal justice teacher and state representative Earl Read. He let me sit in on the education committee hearings and let me come down to the floor, and it was a wonderful experience to get to know how the government works. I am so eternally grateful for the opportunities I have had!

As the end of senior year approaches, I will attend Belmont University in Tennessee as part of the Global Honors Program!

Along with this, I attended my last AL Youth Legislative Conference, where I served as the 76th Senate Pro Temp. My conference ended with being selected as a top-25 delegate to attend the Conference on National Affairs and being awarded and recognized with the Betty Carr Award for service and contributions to the YMCA and the Youth Legislative Conference!

I’m excited to share that I have the honor of representing RI at the American Legion Oratorical Contest! After winning the department contest, I get to go to Michigan to deliver a prepared oration on voter turnout and the Constitution, as well as a shorter oration on a randomly drawn amendment or article. I’m also excited to have my Eagle Court of Honor coming up! I’m so grateful for these opportunities and for the Hometowns Program for inspiring my interest in the Constitution!

This past year, a lot has changed in my life. I lost my grandmother, I’ve switched through several jobs, I even had to get a new car (that I now have to replace). Mentally, I’m doing fine but it has all been pretty hard on me. However, I’m very optimistic. I’m getting ready to graduate soon, and I even found a business partner to help me with my online clothing store. Given the circumstances, I would say I’m doing pretty good right now. Oh I almost forgot, I cut off my locs too and now I have an afro.

This past month I played the Tuba at the Central District of Massachusetts Concert Band Festival. I also was accepted into a couple of colleges I applied to such as American University, Georgia Tech, University of Maryland, and more! Finally, I celebrated the end of high school midterms with my friends at Chipotle.

The Hometown program has greatly influenced my life. Since I have joined the program, I was inspired by the teaching of Supreme Court cases and I have established a new club at my school and started using similar methods to provide civics education sessions at the club by talking about legal cases that related to our lives. With the success in Public Forum debate as the Octofinalist in Harvard debate tournament in my 8th grade last year, I stepped into Lincoln-Douglas debate in my freshman year. After adapting the new debate style for 3-4 months, in January 2026, I was able to made my first step to win the U50 (Junior Varsity) first place in Lexington Winter Invitational.

I will be going to the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill and Duke University as a Robertson Scholar! This program allows me to pursue majors, engage with extracurricular activities, perform research with faculty, and participate in programs at both schools. I plan on majoring in History at UNC and International Comparative Studies at Duke.

I am now a Saint Louis University student! I am also a Law Scholar with SLU! This program gives me the opportunity to participate in law-centered seminars and even a pre-admittance into SLU’s Law School. I have also received scholarships from both SLU and my own high school! I got the Vice Presidential’s scholarship! I am planning to double major in International/Global Studies and Political Science on the pre-law track. I’m graduating with honors from three Honors Societies and one volunteer-based club.

Recently, I finished my week of mid-terms. I consider a wonderful accomplishment given how difficult the IB program is at my school. The IB (International Baccalaureate) program is like the AP program but tougher. Additionally, I started making a fabulous artwork of a wolf-dragon creature.

This summer, I spent my time at the Department of Water Resources exploring the history of Sacramento! This was the first official internship the Department of Water Resources has held for high school students. 5 of us got to explore the deep history of Sacramento and its water rights issues. We spoke with multiple experts, including Justice Ron Robie, the 5th director of the Department in 1975. I learned about the great work that people in our local governments do to keep us safe through environmental disasters and how I can work to further help my own city’s health. Whether helping tackle Sacramento’s monumental redlining issues or reintroducing bats into the wild, I’ve learned valuable life lessons that will set me up for the future to build a better world.

I joined the Hometowns program to achieve a higher out-of-school education experience and more knowledge. Ever since then, I’ve been researching more colleges and career paths that match exactly what I want to do when I’m older. I slowly learned more about myself during this experience, and I learned I could help large groups of people by becoming a Policy Analyst. I dreamed of becoming any form of government worker, and my biggest dream is becoming mayor or a congresswoman. I want to thank not only the Supreme Court and Historical Society, but all of the members around me in Chattanooga for the eye-opening experience and new friendships I made. Thank you!

This summer, I served as the Communications and Public Speaking intern at a local Minnesota non-profit organization focused on uniting communities and igniting youth leadership in the prevention of online exploitation and sex trafficking. As part of this internship, I recently had the opportunity to present to the Chaska Human Rights Commission about a proposal to implement a county-wide online exploitation awareness week. The initiative focuses on educating youth and families about what sex trafficking is, different forms of manipulation, and attainable support for individuals who need it.

In April, I was elected as ASB president for the 26-27 school year! I was also chosen to be Unity Captain for our school’s cheerleading team, meaning I am in charge of leading both Varsity and JV during practices and games! Our team recently attended UCA cheer camp at UC Davis, where I was selected for All American (a selective cheer group with opportunities to cheer in exclusive locations) and Pin It Forward (a pin given to someone on the individual teams from a UCA staff member that represents why America needs cheerleaders). I’ve also been working as a summer camp counselor at Arden Park Parks & Rec, while leading the senior class in homecoming float builds at my grandparents’ house! I’m so excited to start my senior year at El Camino Fundamental High School, and can’t wait for Friday Night Lights as well as all the big events I get to experience one last time!

This summer, I had the honor of serving as a Youth & College Digital Organizer at the NAACP National Convention, where I helped promote the work of the Youth & College Division and engage members through digital communications. I was also elected as the Region V Youth Representative on the National Youth & College Rules Committee, giving me the opportunity to represent young leaders from across the region and help shape our division’s governing procedures. This experience strengthened my leadership skills and deepened my commitment to advocacy and service.

Since the “My Hometown” program, I’ve been very busy with school and fun extracurricular activities! I volunteered as a camp counselor over a weekend for middle schoolers, played in my school’s musical “Back to the 80s”, and continued to be on the honor roll for school, getting all As and maintaining a 4.5 GPA. I’ve also continued my volunteer work at my local hospital and within my school, all while having fun!

Between 2025 and 2026, everything felt like a miracle. In just one year, I became more persistent, self-disciplined, and principled—sparked by key programs and internships. The Supreme Court and My Hometown program reshaped my perspective and exposed me to diverse viewpoints. I also met a wonderful friend who fueled my motivation and ambition. Recently, I’ve been focusing on academics for AP season, though I’ll soon shift to career and university goals. I’m also reading Conquering Crisis by Admiral William H. McRaven—an inspiring book on leadership that I recommend.

This April vacation, I was able to visit Washington, D.C. I visited the Supreme Court, the Capitol, the Library of Congress, and many other beautiful buildings and places. It was an amazing experience, and I will definitely be going back.

I’ve spent the beginning of this year serving in Latin America through mission work, where I’ve been for the last four months. I’ve served at an orphanage and local kids program, evangelizing, encouraging children, and helping wherever needed. Along the way, I have climbed Acatenango in Guatemala, visited Mayan ruins, hiked beautiful landscapes, explored cities, and met people from many different walks of life. I’ve also begun a blog to share stories and reflections from this season of faith, growth, and service. I will be returning to the Hometowns Program in June as a mentor and am excited to invest in others, continue growing, and discover even more of what history has in store for me. After Hometowns, I look forward to returning to the mission field.

I have been working with the Massachusetts Civic Learning Coalition to work on creating a high school voting registration model that will be proposed to the state and if approved implemented in all high schools across Massachusetts. In 2018 there was a law passed in MA saying that all high schools needed a voting registration model and we haven’t done that yet so 9 students and I were selected to work to create one that can be implemented throughout the state. I am so excited to share this with you and I don’t think I would have gotten the opportunity for this fellowship without having done the hometowns program. I have also been accepted to American University and Rhodes College which I am super excited about!

I’m an upcoming junior in high school and my aspiration is to be a criminal defense lawyer! The Supreme Court and My Hometown program immensely brightened my education and love for the law. I’m president of the mock trial club at my school and it’s been a great experience. After the Hometowns program I know that my knowledge of the law is going to help me so much in mock trial and I’m very grateful for it!
